![]() ![]() In the first film, Larry, having taken up a new job as a security guard, discovered that the exhibits at the New York Natural History Museum were somehow brought to life at night by the powers of an ancient Egyptian gold tablet. The story fails to grip or charm and far too much falls on the not-always-likable shoulders of Ben Stiller, who plays the central figure of Larry. The overall feeling is one of disappointment and flatness. If there ever was a moment for a third – and, as a former fan, I think there was – that moment has passed. The first film was released a full eight years ago, while the excellent second – buoyed by the presence of Amy Adams and Hank Azaria – came out more than five years ago. Unfortunately, there are others…Ĭhief among which is that it has simply been too long coming. With the two films also sharing comedy encounters at security lodges, an episode in a ventilation shaft and night-time chases through galleries (Nicole Kidman does the chasing in one, a fossilised triceratops in the other), this series of small coincidences is one reason this final instalment of the franchise is so underwhelming.
